Red Collection

The Red Collection is a contemporary series of figurative paintings exploring the shift from childhood into adolescence. Inspired by my two teenage children, the works capture quiet, fleeting moments from this in-between stage of life — where identity, independence, and emotion begin to take shape.

Red runs through the entire collection. Starting as my daughter’s favourite colour, it becomes a unifying symbol of change, energy, and emotional intensity — a focal point in each painting that carries meaning beyond the visual.

The compositions are cropped and simplified, focusing on fragments of the figure rather than full portraits. This creates a sense of anonymity, making the scenes feel both personal and universal. Worn red shoes at a doorway suggest a quiet step away from childhood. Red socks draped over a sofa capture the ease of teenage life. A figure in headphones, turned away, reflects adolescence’s inward, private world.

The work is minimalist and tonal — detail is reduced, with shape, colour, and atmosphere doing the heavy lifting. A muted palette is punctuated by bold red, creating contrast and tension, while soft edges and restrained brushwork keep the mood calm and quietly emotive.

Each painting is acrylic on canvas, presented in a handmade hardwood frame chosen to complement the simplicity and warmth of the work.
